Shawn practices exclusively in criminal defence. Currently he focuses on major crimes: murder, sexual assault, child pornography and other technology crimes. Shawn has been successful at all levels of court in the Province of Alberta. 

 

Shawn obtained a Bachelor of Arts Honours Degree from the University of Prince Edward Island, and a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Alberta. He is the current Vice President of the Criminal Trial Lawyers Association. 

Before becoming a lawyer, Shawn spent several years in the Information Technology sector, working for numerous large telecommunications companies, eventually coming to Edmonton to work for IBM. Shawn’s technology background has given him expertise in the workings of web and social media (such as Facebook and Instagram), email, instant messaging, internet networking, text messaging, cellular telephones and smartphones (hardware, software and cellular tower networks), GPS, image manipulation and reconstruction, and many other forms of consumer and industrial technology. Shawn has built a network of forensic analysts, IT architects, and telecommunications experts to help successfully defend his clients and combat police manipulation of digital information.

Shawn is acutely aware that being accused of a crime can be stressful, confusing, and overwhelming. The criminal justice system is complicated and people need help navigating that system. Shawn believes that everyone deserves to be treated with respect and that clients need to be informed of their rights in plain, understandable language.
